Cornwall Wild Swimming Retreat

Invigorate the senses, improve technique and become immersed in the health-giving benefits of cold water swimming during an unforgettable sea swimming retreat at St Michaels. Between swim sessions led by our cold-water guru from Swimlab, cocoon yourself in the warmth and comfort of the St Michaels wellness experience, where our spa, restaurants, health club and ocean-adjacent bedrooms are enfolded by sub-tropical gardens, which themselves tumble onto Gylly beach. There, on the sheltered sands, a few steps away lie the crystal clear Cornish waters, where wild swimmers take the plunge year-round.

Retreat Itinerary & requirements

Swimming experience - while no prior open water swimming is necessary, it is a real advantage. You should be able to swim 400m without stopping. This can be a mix of strokes though some should be front crawl.

Equipment - a swimming (not watersports) wetsuit is essential unless you have experience with non-wetsuit open water swimming. It is possible to rent suits, please discuss well in advance of your stay with our reservations team. You should also bring a bright swim hat, goggles/spare goggles, a dry robe or warm beach towels, sunglasses, sun cream, hot drinks flask (if possible). If you have a towe float, this is an advantage but these can be provided.

3:30pm Arrive, check in and relax into your subtropical hideaway

6pm - Welcome talk: a chance to meet other retreat guests and hear from Salim Ahmed, your retreat leader and expert wild swim instructor.

8pm - Dinner in Brasserie on the Bay (dinner will not be a group activity)

7am Pool time - enjoy a swim in the Health Club poolwhile your technique is gently assessed, and tips provided.

9am Open Water Basics - a land-based session with breakfast (if you would prefer a cooked breakfast please ensure you have booked this to be completed before 9am) covering the basics of open water swimming, swim philosophy and swim-physics. Tea, coffee, smoothies, fruit and pastries will be served.

11am Sea Swim session 1 - it's finally time to hit open water as we head to Gylly Beach for a group coaching session.

4.45pm Afternoon yoga stretch session – led by our health club yoga instructor and designed to stretch out and relax swim-limbs.

6pm Guided coastal walk to nearby Swanpool Beach with sea swim, group coaching and Q & A session.

8pm Dinner in the Brasserie on the Bay

9am Light breakfast and talk with Salim

10.30am Sea swimming session from Gylly Beach with individual coaching

2pm SUP paddleboarding session or 2-hour hydrothermal spa experience

Swim Lab’s Salim Ahmed is, quite simply, a cold water swim guru: a title hard-earned through years of coaching on lakes and open seas across Europe. Soak up some sea swim wisdom as Salim shares his cold water philosophy, conducts individual video analysis and provides small group coaching taking in technique, breathing methods and swim psychology.  

Then, while the wetsuit dries out, head for the beach or yoga studio with the experts at St Michaels Health Club, who will gently draw you through stretch sessions specifically tailored for tired swimmers!
