When people decide to go on a diet, they often make the mistake of massively under-eating and cutting out all of their favourite foods, which just ends up making you so hungry that you eventually break your diet for a binge. Making sure you are eating enough when you’re trying to lose weight is extremely important. When choosing your meals, make sure you have a good-sized portion of protein, some healthy fats, and some starchy carbohydrates such as rice, potatoes, grains etc. Fill the rest of your plate up with as many vegetables as you want. Vegetables are high in fibre, which keeps you feeling fuller for longer, and low in calories meaning you can have lots of them without breaking your deficit.
We often mistake thirst for hunger. Next time you think you need a snack, it might just be that you’re dehydrated. When you’re feeling snacky, first drink a full glass of water. Wait 20mins, and if you’re still hungry, have a snack. But you might have just been thirsty.
The first thing a lot of people do when they want to lose weight is to remove all ‘unhealthy’ things from their diets. A lot of people will also try and remove or cut down on carbohydrates. Removing all of your favourite foods from your diet will just make it unachievable and unsustainable. Don’t focus on removing everything, instead try to add good foods to your diet. Add extra fruit, vegetables, more protein etc. If you are still hungry, or still craving treats after you have eaten a plate of good foods, then have the treat that you wanted. But you’ll start to find that you are already full and satisfied, and the craving for the sweet treat has gone. This will help to build better, healthier habits as well, instead of just restricting yourself, which will make you crave treats even more.
